Saturday, December 12, 2009
MONTEGO BAY, St James -- The police have arrested one person in relation to Thursday's recovery of three guns and more than 200 rounds of ammunition at the AJAS Cargo Warehouse at the Sangster International Airport.
According to the police, the ammunition and guns -- a Haskell .45 semi- automatic pistol, a Model 995 rifle, and an Intratec 9mm luger semi automatic pistol -- were found by a team from the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division, the Canine Division and police from the Sangster International Airport, along with members from the Contraband Enforcement Team.
The team, acting on a tip from the Customs Department about the presence of "a suspicious piece of cargo -- had gone to search the warehouse.
Aside from the guns, the police also seized:
* fifty 9mm cartridges;
* fifty .45mm cartridges;
* fifty.40mm cartridges;
* sixty.223mm cartridges;
* forty 7.62mm cartridges; and
* four magazines for different calibre firearms.
In the meantime, the St Andrew Central police said they have seized a total of 7,233 illegal DVDs, 4,106 illegal CDs and 2,200 empty DVDs and CD casings over the last three months, ending November 30.
Nine persons have been arrested and charged for breaches of the Copyright Act.
According to the police, the illegal items were seized in Half-Way-Tree -- mainly on the sidewalks and in the Transport Centre -- and in the New Kingston areas.
"We are working hard to reduce the amount of illegal DVDs and CDs on the roads in the division and I am pleased with the number of seizures we have made over the last three months. There is still a lot of work to be done but the present initiative will not slacken. It will continue until at least the selling of these items reaches a tolerable level," Divisional Commander for St Andrew Central, Superintendent Derrick Knight said.
He said the police have established a strong link between crimes in his division and the sale of the illegal merchandise. "There is no doubt in my mind that there is a strong link and that is why we are working overtime to reduce the trade."
Superintendent Knight explained that it was extremely difficult to apprehend persons who sell illegal DVDs and CDs as "they are extremely cunning and oftentimes abandon their illegal wares when the police approach."
